Problem ? Which problem ? What are we gonna read about now? I know these things must have popped up in your mind as you read the title of this blog . So, in this blog I am gonna write about , fast fashion , environmental degradation , synthetic fibers etc. etc. all over again because we as people have this habit of not listening to important things if just said once. SO here we go.....
The first and foremost point is to acknowledge that yes there is a problem with Fashion and and how it is made .
Now comes that what is the problem , the problem is that the fashion industry has become world's second largest industry causing environmental problems . If you've read my earlier blogs you must know that fashion production makes more than 10% carbon emission , 85% of textile ends up in landfills and is also responsible for drying up of rivers .
Now let's watch a video to get a clearer picture that how big of a problem this is -
The above video shows just a little part of the effects of fashion production , This short video clearly projects the seriousness of the issue . It;s not only about the environment , we have come to a point that it has gone way beyond that , it's about the people now , it about our future .
FAST FASHION - THE VILLAIN
By now we are pretty clear of the concept of fast fashion which is making trendy garments in bulk trying to lure the consumers with the low prices . It has come to the point that we feel very challenging to repeat the clothes , garment quality is declining day by day , and as a result these items gets worn out very easily . Let's face it guys , this is a trap , a good quality product will last for years and years , but according to the concept of fast fashion what is the point of making good quality products when the aim is to get maximum sale . And it's not just about the quality of the garment it is also about how is the garment made , what all chemicals are they using , what all machinery are they using for the process of production ,
Fast Fashion brands like Zara and H&M tend to use Synthetic fibers , chemical based coloring techniques and a lot of machinery to produce their clothing line . The use of these materials and practices ultimately drops down the cost of their product and who pays the actual cost ? The environment pays the actual cost .
WHAT ARE SYNTHETIC FIBERS -
Synthetic fibers are man made fibers most of them are prepared using raw material petroleum. These fibers are cheaper and easy to produce in large quantities contributing an overwhelming amount of chemicals , waste and carbon emission. some of the synthetic fibers are nylon , polyester , rayon , spandex etc.
List of synthetic fibers-
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS CAUSED BY FASHION INDUSTRY-
1.WATER POLLUTION
2.WATER CONSUMPTION
3.MICROFIBER POLLUTION
4.WASTE PROBLEM
5.HARMFULL CHEMICALS
6.SOIL DEGRADATION
7.RAINFOREST DESTRUCTION
Being a fashion student it truly shakes me from inside thinking that is
this my future , am I also gonna be a part of this . But looking at such
scenarios I feel that if not me then who will take up the charge to clear out
the system , by the word ' me ' I mean ' the youth '.
Now that we all know what the problem is , it becomes somewhat easy to find out the solution . Wait for my next blog on - FINDING OUT THE SOLUTIONS .

The growth of synthetic fibre usage is ultimately building space in the landfills. The sooner everyone gets aware about it, the better it will be for us and our environment. Very well written blog!!
your blog is pertinent and precise. it is appealing and thought provoking. I would also like to add that not just as design students, but as inhabitants of our planet Earth, it is our duty to protect our environment by discouraging fast fashion as much as possible.
I found the blog very informative and power packed. And true as future designers it does scare us but as youth it's time we step forward and bring a change.
Yeah you addressed it right... Fast fashion the villan....i think most of the problems are created by these fast fashion brands....knowly that they are creating a mess out there....they are just mindlessly manufacturing so much of garment
I agree Synthetic fibers also taint the water bodies, from a waste product derived from textile factories to dyes, they are all flushed into our waterways and sewers, making the environment more harmful and dangerous. Synthetic fiber is very harmful.
