Garment Recreation ( Reuse, Reduce & Recycle )

This blog is a bit different and exciting from my other blogs , In this blog I have tried to capture the essence of sustainability in a practical way . The goal was to recreate a piece of garment from my own wardrobe using the concept of 3 r's . So here it goes .

The 3 R's

Reduce , Reuse and Recycle - all help to cut down on amount of waste we throw away . They conserve natural resources , landfill spaces and energy .

The Inspiration -

BLAIR WOLDORF

Blair Woldorf is a fictional character in the famous series Gossip Girl . She is known for her chic look and modest clothing . She is the daughter of a very popular fashion designer through which she gets all her fancy genes . Her idol looks consist of modest and classy clothing and a prominent headband .

The Garments used -

THE SKIRT

I had this skirt for a really long time and I have tried every possible way to style it ,I don't know why but it made me look really weird . So I thought of using it skirt for this project. My major goal is to upcycle this skirt into something which I could wear.

THE SHIRT

Next I pulled out this really old white shirt from my father's wardrobe .

Mood Board-

The Ideation-

PROCESS BOOK

After collecting the garments I would need , I then started working on the ideas I had, Keeping my inspiration in mind I tried to make an off shoulder top with the skirt and shirt I had . Firstly I sketched out the variations and then finalized the design . Also I noted down the materials I would need . Since this is a project based on sustainability I kept it as simple as possible and tried to work with 0 wastage .

The final design-

This is the final design of the top I am gonna make with the skirt and shirt shown . I have designed this garment in such a was that it becomes a 2020 version of the Blair Woldorf dressing .

The Process-

In the above video I have shown all the steps that I followed to make the final piece , I have used the sleeves of the white shirt and inserted an elastic band on the top top form gathers , ( P.S. - following the zero waste concept I kept the middle part of the shirt for some future DIY projects ) . Then I Stitched the sleeves to the top band of the skirt with two pieces of thin elastic , to make it comfortable for any kind of movement . After these steps my work was pretty much done , but to make it a little bit glam I pasted tiny pearls on the cuffs and the top band of the skirt and tied a white ribbon in place of buttoning up the cuffs . Lastly I used the remaining ribbon , elastic and pearls to make the signature Blair Woldorf hairband.

The Final Looks-

1st look - The Blair Woldorf look

In this particular look I tried to project a classy upper east side look. To balance out the bright colors of the bodice I played around with neutral tones , also as jewelry I worn a pearl necklace keeping thing elegant . And don't forget to look at the headband. The makeup is kept subtle .

2nd look - The Brunch Look

I have created this look for a girly day out with close friends . In this look I tried to be a little funky with the white bad tied at the waist as a fanny pack and big white earrings . Also I paired this top with distressed denims and chunky tan ankle length boots . I have kept the makeup on a bright side by putting on a green eyeliner .

3rd Look - The Formal Look
Surprisingly this look is my favorite out of all . I tried to make this top formal by tucking it in a black pencil skirt. I have accessorized it with sleek gold earrings and a laptop bag , For the footwear I have worn black basic office shoes and to add the high fashion feel to this look I have worn a black coat over my shoulders . The makeup is kept warm with brown tones .

Reflection -

This assignment made me realize that it's not necessary to always buy new garment pieces , all we need is a little bit creativity . It was interesting to create something out of the things i had at home , I feel really accomplished after completing this piece and will surely do more such projects to inspire people around me .
